10 days and no new post...

I have been feeling internal and personal so I have started to not use this forum as a means by which to go off on my evening banter.

I am en route to Seattle.

I will post something after this weekend.

I am working thru some stuff and need to be thinking and writing; not typing.

A good day and night in the city

After having picked up J from LAX late last night and stopping for grub at Jerry's, I didn;t get to sleep until like 4.

Woke up just past noon. Understandably so.

Head over to work after having stopped at Starbucks and meeting Chad from the Pink Enemy. A good day of work finalizing Rakim's upcoming tour of Europe and maintenance of the 2K Tour w/ Z-Trip.

Made some steak for dinner with Grayson.

Went to an AA meeting for the first time in at least a year to celebrate Jordan's 6th year of sobriety.

Stopped by Canter's for a roast beef on rye and coffee and reading. Hey Rodney.

Then over to Hyde.

Groove Armada and G Radius spinning the dancing juicyness.

Hey J and old and new friends.

Drop a too-intoxicated and left-behind friend off in Bel Air.

Then home (and here....I am)

ds

satisfying night...

and goodnite

The first of the gang...

...with a ring on her finger.

Congrats, Dani.

My first girlfriend will be a married woman in the summer of '08.

All the best...

A few days later....

It is sunday afternoon. After a nice bacon and cheese sandwich, a cup of coffee, a nice session of sleeping in until past 1pm and...here I am.

It has indeed been a few days since I last posted.

In the time since my last post, I have:
-gone to Malibu and spent 3 or so hours at Moonshadows drinking wine and eating tasty treats
-lost in Scrabble to my Aunt Geri :( but it was nice to have spent time with her
-played basketball at UCLA
-gone to dinner with Jacky Shaprow (and her friend Ariella and brother) with a lovely suprise appearance by Talia Frankel
-gotten more excited about work as my brother gave me a list of artists he wants me to start booking on my own
-gone to Hyde for the first time since being back and enjoyed myself seeing people that I cared to see
-relished in the fact that I am feeling fresh in this city after having come back from a wonderful vacation
-prepared some steaks in their marinade (but have yet to grill and consume them)
-watched the replay of two of my old friends getting drafted into the NBA
-decided the Editors new album is amazing and it really speaks to me and I can't say enough positive things about it

Zune's "At The BBQ"

I was at ease in a sea of paranas.

What a tragedy of a brand the "ZUNE" has become.

Microsoft is clouded by the fog of Seattle.

The Editors "An End Has a Start"

Is really striking a chord with me.

I am excited for them to tour the US and I can forsee myself traveling to see them not just in Los Angeles bot a handful of other nearby markets:
Tue 09/18/07 Seattle, WA Chop Suey

Wed 09/19/07 Portland, OR Berbati's Pan

Thu 09/20/07 San Francisco, CA The Fillmore

Sun 09/23/07 San Diego, CA San Diego Street Scene

Mon 09/24/07 Los Angeles, CA The Wiltern

and possibly:
appearing with "Monolith Festival"

Fri 09/14/07 Morrison, CO Red Rocks Amphitheatre

and most likely:
appearing with "Virgin Festival" - Canada

Sun 09/09/07 Toronto, ON Island Park

How I am Feeling now

I feel:
-at ease (read: not anxious)
-calm
-honest (read: not rambling anxiously)
-fresh
-aware
-excitedly unexcited
-engaged with myself
-like I am growing
-sexually (read: intimately) frustrated (and I use that word cautiously)

The Social Psychology of (Mass) Transportation

IN being back, I have come to recognize some of the aspects that go along with the system of a "car culture" (or "individual transportation system" or ...). Simply put, I seeing many of the negative aspects of being in a place where the way with which we get around is in solitude. Both mentally (and emotionally) and physically, I see a lot of the negative sides.

I want to list some thoughts now then come back to this subject later as there are other more pressing thoughts in my mind to release:
-physically, sitting a car for the amount of time that one must cannot be good for the body (read: legs, back, arms, knees, neck). Sitting in a vehicle is not a natural position for one to be one. A memory comes to mind of being in NY on the subway. I was seated on a crowed subway ar and a woman who was maybe in her 30s or 40s and looked pretty exhausted was standing and I offered her my seat. Her replay was that she has been sitting all day and she peferred to be standing. Furthermore, individual forms of transportation seem to take more time than if one were to traveling the same distance on a mass transit medium (coupled with the time of parking and not to mention the frustration that can come with not being able to find a parking spot and the additional time it takes to have to drive aorund and look for a place to park).
-mentally.There are a couple of observations I want to tackle. First, because driving requires one's attention (full or otherwise), it negates the possibility of fully commiting to any other actviity while in the dreiver's seat of a car. By this, I intend to point out the things that one cannot be doing while driving a car that are, in fact, possible to be doing while taking a form of mass transportation: reading, writing, and being able to fully engag in one's thoughts. Another observtion with regard to the mantal implications od personal transit is the differential interaction with oters as compared to that which would occur on mass transit. There are a couple of big points here. First, there are presumably less pre-conceived notions about a person that arise when you are both taking part in mass transit versus being in seperate automobiles. By this, I mean that when you interact (and I use this term cautiously) with someone else on the road, you typically see their automobile before their face. Thus, by the time you see the person(s), you already have some snap judgment about them, whethere you like it or not. To be fair, when traveling on a train or a bus, you may have other cues to status such as clothing or accessories, etc, but the difference is that the interaction (and, by the way, I feel more comfortable refering to time spent with someone on a train or a bus versus a moment of passing in a car on the freeway- an interaction) on a train or a bus is more prolonged. Thus, while you may have some pre-conceived notion based on their appearance, in the time that takes places over the course of the trip, you also may come to notice, what they are reading or what the words on their shirt say, or the jewel that is on their ring or necklace. Going further with this, I would conject that stereotypically hostile-seeming relations such as race relations or relations based on sexual orientation are lessened, because you see that person as just another person traveling on the same bus or subway as you. You get to see different types of people for a longer period of time and more frequently, thus you (as many studies have shown) become more comfortable with those different kinds of people.
-furthermore mentally (with cultural and philosophical implications), traveling on mass transit simply allows you to be more engaged with things becase you are not responsible for the duty of driving. You can read a book or a magazine, you can look through advertisements and listings of upcoming cultural events. A sense of culture is nurtured, for example, with fashion. You have the opportunity to observe what others are wearing and experience a plethora of senses of style that you may not otherwise be exposed to.
-taking it from the micro to the macro:
-- environmentally, it makes more sense. Need not say more here.
--economically, it makes more sense. Instead of money going to privatized companies in the business of individual transportation (read: car insurance companies and oil companies and the like), money is going directly to the city. Thus, funding is being brought to the public and can then be spent accordingly back into public projects.

I think that more thought and time needs to be invested into the sociology and pyschology (on a micro and macro level) with regard to transportation. I don't believe that I have read anything ever about the sociology or psychology of transportation (garnated I haven't done any research into the topic).

That is enough on that, for now, I believe.

Back in Los Angeles

Well, here I am. Back in the backyard of the house I grew up in. The bbq I have used so many times, the brick that has been here as long as forever in my mind, the trees. It's home.

I got back in last night at about midnight. I took a cab home and munched on some food. I ate a few Benedryl and drank a glass of wine and went to bed. I woke up this morning at about 9am and went thru a routine of a day that I have done about 40 or 50 times in the last few months. And now, here I am back at home. Dad is inside watching TV. I am sitting at this table with a cup of coffee, my MacBook, a pack of smokes, a lighter, and my Blackberry.

In the less than 24 hours that I have been back, I have come to see some of the things that I dislike about the city and the lifestyle here. It is important for me to try and get out all the things I think about the life I have in this city while they are fresh in my mind before blending back into routines (which I already have but still have a sense of an outside perspective).

Throughout the day, I look out through a dirty windshield for about 90 minutes. Looked out at other cars and other people in those cars. I had This morning, I read in the L.A. Times that the population of southern California is predicted to grow to nearly 60 million (!) by 2050. The article went on to discuss budgeting implications in excess of $140 billion(!) for "keeping the conjestion in check" with regard to transprtation. Extra lanes and tunnels and subways and so on and so forth.

I didn't enjoy driving today as I may have in the past. Typically, I think, after traveling for a long period of time or simply just being out of Los Angeles for a prolonged period of time, I have enjoyed coming back to driving. Today was different.

As far as work goes, I did some contracts for Jason today and worked on some research. We rode our electric bikes over to the Panjea house for a meeting. Then, we ate at Cafe Solar. I enjoyed sitting outside at the cafe and eating and chilling with Jason and getting into small talk with the people at the table next to us. Jason seemed to be somewhat distant from work and appeared drained.

On my way home, I had thoughts of wanting to move to New York (and Seattle even came to mind, but I somewhat quickly dismissed that idea). I suppose if I didn't still live at my parents' house that I would be feeling differently at the moment. I certainly would. But, I do so I feel the way I do. With regards to the commute, if I lived in the Hollywood area, it would be considerably less. And, I may even be able to get away with just walking or skateboarding or riding a bike, or or or...to work. But, for now, I don't. Really realistically speaking, the earliest that would be possible, I think, is the end of the summer (September 1st, but more realistically October 1st). Could I sell my car and move to New York by that time instead? Would i, do i, really want to do that?

Friends here. I know a lot of people here. This is my hometown. I am familiar with it and the people within it. I have a lot of access here that I would not have in other places. But do those places I have access to really make me more or less happy with my lifestyle? Are they people and places that just fill time in a neutral way or do they better me and further (or create) any happiness for myself? Would NY be any better for me? Who's really to say?

In the time I have spent working for my brother, I think the novelty, that has maybe begun to expire, has been that he is my brother. The actual work that I am doing for him isn't inherently anything that brings me happiness. I think. As far as money, I am actually making less working for him than I did in my previous job. I took a pay cut for two reasons: 1. the novelty of working with my brother (is it a novelty, surely there is a better word to describe) and 2. the promise of better money to come in time. What if I could move to NY and work for Little Big Man? Would that make me any more happy?

Maybe I take my family for granted, but I cannot really say that, in being back in L.A. so far, that I have seen the things that make me happy about living here. Sure, the weather. The beach. Being able to play basketball at so many different places. Being able to get into most any club or party I want to go to. Being able to go to many concerts for free. Having the luxury(?) of a car. Being familiar with a place and knowing where I like to go. Maybe, I'd be feeling differently if my flights weren't delayed and I were welcomed back to the city with a night at the Kibbitz Room.

In a little over 2 months, I turn 23 years old (!) and whatever that means...1/4 life crisis, 1/3 life crisis? I recognize that some change is imminenet. How drastic that change is up to my discretion. What will the next year bring? At this point next summer, where wil I be and what will I be doing? How about 6 months from now? I also suppose that the timetable of when that change shall take place is at my discretion as well.

These are my thoughts.

Back in London

Well, here I am back in London, at a hostel, having a beer. Last night was the last night of my European festival run. It was a great fucking night and a wonderful end with wonderful people to a wonderful trip. It consisted of talking about gypsies with Fredrick from Datarock and their tour manager, bullshiting with the taller Frenchie from Justice, and meeting a handful of other good folks. Arctic Monkeys and the Muse and Dune and Datarock and some Basement Jaxx and Justice to finish off the night of performances. I packed up my shit after Datarock's set and left it in the catering area behing the Arena stage. Hung around and drank beers and shot the shit for the night before Justice. Then hung back around for a bit after that set and didn't end up back at the hotel until after 5am. Slept in, woke up and moved to the bed once J and Sabrina had left for their flight. Uploaded all my pics and videos (I still have to get the ones from J's hi-tec camera). Easy flight today from Copenhagen. It takes like an hour to get to the airport from this hostel and my flight out of Heathrow leaves at 4:45pm. I get back into L.A. on tuesday night (at like 11pm). ...I'm going to go have a cigarette and make something with my night but there is lots more to talk about and I will do some more typing tomorrow while at the airport and maybe on the plane as well in Word.

Leaving Roskilde

Don't have time to really let it all out. I am at the Hotel in Roskilde. Have to hop in the shower and get my shit together and head into Copenhagen. I have a 6:15pm flight to London. I am exhaustd because I didn't get back to this hotel until like 5:30am after hanging with Fredrick from Datarock and Justice until like 4 shootin the shit and talking about Paris and gypsies. Then I walked the wrong direction so it took like an hour to get back to the hotel.....aaaanyway. Then, tomorrow I have a 4:45pm flight back to LA (thru Chicago). I will be back home at LAX around 11pm if my flights are all on time and shit. :) Cheers. I have survived my last European festival of this summer. My tent did not (nor did my fucking jewelery but I will get into all of that later :( haha

Off to Roskilde

Well, boys and girls (and whoever else reads this...if anyone other than me), I am off to Roskilde. I got my wristband and all access sticker and meal tickets. I just got back to the hotel to pick up my belongings. I got a dope pair of shoes as well as a new pair of jeans and shirt (from Acne, in exchange for the extra wristband I had for Roskilde; he also gave me 500 Kroner). I am having a beer and a cigarette before heading to the train station. I would still like to buy one more pair of shoes (possibly those Pierre Hardy's from Storm). Jason comes in with Sabrina tomorrow evening. I will probably come back into town with him during one of the days of the festival because it is only a 45 minute train ride. Additionally, I would like to stop in Christiansen when I come back in to get some hash and then maybe stop by the reommended corner to get some other substances....

...off I go momentarily, perhaps after taking an appropriate dump into a toilet that flushes because it may be a few days before I can do that again...(don't you love the details? yeah, me too)...

cheers,
ds37

Kobenhavn

In Copenhagen at the airport Hilton having a bite to eat and a glass of wine. Waiting to pick up the passes for Roskilde. They are not here now, and I will probably have to come back up here later this afternoon, but hopefully not wait until tomorrow. If that is the case, then I guess I will stay at a hostel tonight or possibly ask Jonathon if I can stay with him or hopefully hear back from Stina. But, ideal would be to just pick the passes up later this afternoon and then head out to Roskilde tonight and set up camp.

Well, I really fucking adore this city. Where to begin...I got a haircut so my hair is cleaned up now. Its not extremely short but the back and sides were cut and thinned out. I still have a good amount of hair in front which I can push forward or back. It is looking very good forward and to the side. I am cleanshaven as well so I am feeling dmn sexy. Defintely gonna get some at Roskilde looking and feeling the way i do. Jason is in London with Sabrina and gets into Copenhagen tomorrow afternoon.

[currently uploading photos to Facebook]

I have spent the last two nights at the Hotel Fox. It is a hotel with a modern asthetic with each of the reooms having been designed by a different artist. [I just realized I forgot to take pictures of my room...anyway] Its lobby is similar to the Standard on Sunset and it has a posh kitchen/bar. I haven't eaten there yet but what is cool about it is that there is a fixed menu. They will bring out like 5 or 6 smaller courses and each (if you are so inclined, and I would be) can come with a drink that has been specially catered to compliment the flavors of the dish.

So let's start from the beginning with Copenhagen...
-Monday: I fly into Copenhagen from Oslo after having spent the day doing laundry and sleeping in at the Anker Hotel (not hostel). Upon leaving Oslo, I purchased a nice big bottle of Jack Daniels and a carton of Marlbro reds from the Duty Free. This has become a tradition. (for the record, I also wanted to get a bottle of Jager, but you are only allowed to bring in one liter of alcohol per person) I get into Copenhagen around 7:30pm and take the train from the airport to central Copenhagen and then take a few-minute cab to the hotel. Get there, settle in, relax, have a drink, hang at the bar, then watch some Simpsons in my room and pass out. The bed was by far the best I have had since arriving in Europe. I had arranged to meet with Jonathan the next day to hang out and I feel asleep in anticipation of getting to chill with him again. I wake up around 11 and go downstairs for some espresso and a smoke and some time on the computer. I found a salon and made an appointment for 1pm. The trains were running late so I just went for my haircut and told him to meet me there. I get my haircut (the style having been already established). She spoke little English but we got by and I really like the result. She had the best style of any of the salons I went into so I chose her. After that, we walked around to a bunch of different stores. I got a black vest from a cool vintage store. Then we went to Illum which is like this 5-floor department store with all kinds of stuff frin jewelery and homeware to adult contemporary clothing to more youthful clothing. I got a pair of red Dr. Denim jeans as well as a Nike reservable, hooded, windbreaker. Then, we met his girlfriend for lunch at Sunset Blvd., a more healthy version of Subway wih oven-baked french fries that were very tasty. We walked for a bit more then parted ways. Cool cat, I really enjoy his company. As I said before, it was really nice to have met some people that I spent good time with. Especially jonathon. We had some great talks and its a nice feeling to know I know someone in Copenhagen who I can stay with and keep in touch with and maybe have send me some cool clothes and Danish music from time to time :) Later in the day, while I was shopping I sent him a text message saying it was good to have met you, we will keep in touch, and remind him I forgot to give him that Marilyn Manson book, he responded: "I can only say same about you man. It was really "cozy to meet you once again in Cph ;) We will definately keep in touch, you are one hell of an interesting person to have as a friend. Oh I totally forgot about it too :b I have to buy it myself. Thanks anyway lad." That gave me a goo feeling. Moving on. I continued to walk around and do shopping and got some great stuff including: a killer pair of headphones, a white hoodie with small polka dots, a couple t-shirts, a J.Lindberg gray hoodie (that I am wearing now), a nice buttion up collaed shirt from Acne. WHich reminds me about what happened while I was at Acne. So i start alking to the salesguy at Acne as I am paying for my stuff....tell him I'm from LA, here for Roskilde, bla bla bla, and he is saying how he couldnt get a ticket this year and all that. So since I couldnt get an extra pass for Jonathons girlfriend, he wasnt going to go, so I still have that extra pass (assuming the correct amount are in the envelope for me). So i am going to make an exchange for him. We had discussed two pairs of jeans yesterday but I am really in a need for cash so I think I will try to get 2000 korner for the pass (a. the festival is sold out and b. the ticket is a vip ticket). I dont know how much they originally went for but $400 seems fair to me. So what I am thinking now is one pair of jeans and 1000 korner. Then, I can get some shoes (which I havent gotten yet and really need) on the credit card and have 1000 kroner for the festival. Which would be cool, so yea. I didnt go out to the bars last night because I want to save money and wanted to get another nice night of sleep before I go back into sleeping-on-a-mat-in-a-tent-with-no-pillow mode. I woke up this morning and did my usual espresso+cigarette+internet and then went to buy a bag because I need something to put my new stuff in. I came back to the hotel, packed up, checked out, and headed here to pick up the passes (which arent here yet and I havent heard back form Jason yet). It is now 2:19pm. And I am frustrated because as I am watching the picture upload to Facebook, the edited ones are not being uploaded, just the originals.

Day 3 of Hove

Ok. Back in the press tent. It is about 11:40AM on my third day at Hove. I am currently uploading some videos to YouTube so that I can put them up on Panjea for Jason. They are my videos from Glastonbury that are basically my video notes about the festival and just ideas in general.

Anyway. It is another day and I am feeling closer and closer to fully healthy each day. I am going to head over to the beach after I am done here with the Danish gys and hopefully Berri if we can find her. Last saw her at Interpol last night.

Well, I left off with packing up my tent at 5:30 am on monday, Got on the bus after having dropped my blanket and pillow in the mud while loading my stuff into the storage compartment of the coach. Talked with a funny guy on the bus from the festival into London. I can't remember his name or where he was from but it was a nice interaction for the majority of the bus ride. Get back to London at about 11. So I was completely muddy, head to toe, with my Wellington's still on, looking like quite a bum if it was not understood in the context of the fact that I had just come back from glastonbury. I was greeted with two different kinds of reactions, one being that of sympathy or disgust in peopl's perception that I was some vgarant, dirty bum, and also was greeted with the response of "how was glastonbury" etc. So I got back to the Earl's Court car depot and walked from there to the Tube where I decided to get off at Hyde Park Corner. Figured I would go to the park, smoke a spliff, relax, and stop in at a coffeeshop and blog a little and catch up with myself. Ended up not going thru the park, but instead, walking thru the post district of Chelsea. I got some fuuunnnny stares as I sat outside of Louis Vutton and across the street from Gucci. I watched as the wealth passed by and entered into my journal some interesting thoughts and observations. It would have been quite the juxtaposition had I pulled out my MacBook and watched those curious responses but I felt it more appropriate to just pull out myjournal and write them in. The juxtaposition of me in front of gucci and louis vutton was satisfying enough for the moment. So I then hop on a bus where the bus driver looking at the bill I gave him quite carefully to make sure it was counterfit. His assuming that a vagrant bum has the access to resources of counterfit money was funny enough to hold me over for a littl while as I rode the bus. I got off in an area near Chelsea where I saw a Starbucks (it was Parsons Green). I sat at the Strarbucks for a bit and had some coffee and took an amazing dump and blogged a bit ("Post-Glasto"). I elicited the responses of "how was glastonbury, etc" which was a nice contrast to the "wow, look at this disgusting bum" responses I got when I was in the posh area. Ok, so I finish up at the starbucks and head to the tube where I get off at heathrow. I had to wait a while to check in because I was too early. I had to get my back pack wrapped because there was too much shit hanging off of it (my blanket, my jacket, etc.). So i finally get my bag checked in and I go downstairs to the restaurant and finally have a nice meal. Burger and chips and a maker's on the rocks. I delve deeper into the autobiography of Marilyn Manson (which I haven't talked about at all here yet but I have been reading on and off since I bought it the day I had free in London before the bus to Glastonbury. It is really good and I am finding it quite engaging.) Then, I go to my gate where I sit on my computer again and upload my pictures and videos from Glastonbury. Which I must say with some frustration and disappointment are lacking because of wetness and battery situations which reminds me that I need to either get another camera or I need to purchase an extra battery so that I can always have a back-up battery on me at all times. I get on the plane to Oslo. I satrted playing with iFilm because I wanted to attempt to put all of my video blogs to jason together as one piece. When I get back to LA, I need to start playing with it more because it is really fun and easy. Also, iPhoto editing options are really easy to use and can really improve the quality of pictures, so that is something to also keep in mind. OK, so I get off the plane in Oslo to the wonderful airport that I remember from a year ago. Beatiful modern, wood and glass, clean lines. Beatiful. Get in at like 10:30 or something and the sky is blue. I forgot about all that wow...[break for cigarette]...ok back...so i hop on the train to go to anker hostel...i take it way too far and miss my stop, mind you, it is now about midnight or 1am. So i get off at the totttallly wrong fucking stup in the middle of buttfuck nowhere and there are for sure no more trains going until at least 5 or 6 hours from now, it is totally one of those times where one can go fuuuuuuck and just whine and bitch which i did and hit a couple things and let some anger out. i havent showered in days, i feel disgusting and no here i am in the middle of nowehere. this is when you think about how far you are away from home, how nice it would be to be back up driving up beverly glen left on nicada left on claray, hit the garage opener, take a bottle of water form the garage, take a dump with a toilet that fliushed take a nice hot eshower and get in a nice warm bed and beat off and go to sleep, after thinking about all that, then you get practical, so i tried hitchhiking which did not work, i mean honeslty if you saw how i looked, you would not even come close to thinking about picking me up unless you were some pervy truck driver, so i hike for about a mile or two which felt like hours until i get to a gas station, i asked the clerk there to call me a cab which he does and then he tells me it would be about 700 kroner to get back to where i want to go (which translates into about 110 bucks). so i get in the cab and he says he will take me to the bus stop where i can catch a bus back to oslo which will be about 195 kroner but it doesnt leave for another hour whatever its what i have to do after having gotten in the cab, we see the bus and it has just left my stop so i tell the cabbie to follow it. he chases it down and i flag it down. pay the cabbie 100 kroner for literally a 2 minute drive but it was worth it i guess and then i get in the bus and pay him the 195 kroner and we are on our way....get back to the main bus terminal and then take a 100 kroner cab to the hostel. i get to my room and i have a stinky african above me (no disrepspect, just honest), and a weird like 60 year old guy in the bed next to me, a creepy older german guy who has just put on his motorcycle gear and is heading out at like 3 am and then some guy who looks like a weird mix of italian and middle eastern and is totally a meathead steroid guy,....i shower and put something in the outlet to charge and pass out. the next day is tuesday (the first day of hove which i miss a lot of the music i really wanted to see) but ya know what i had to do my laundry and i had to get a nice rest in a bed, sleep til like noon and pay for an additional night at the hostel so i dont have to leave. i do all my laundry have some food relax, smoke a spliff and then head to the bus terminal at 6. take a 6:15 bus which takes 5 hours!!!!! to get to hove. i get there and that is when the shit begins. it is pouring so fuckng hard and i dont have a place to sleep and i cant get my passes until the next day. it is an ugly sceene. i sleep in a parking garage and i just do it. had to. the next morning, i am awoken by polic offficers who remind me that the parking garage is not a campsite to which i respond it was raining so hard last night and i couldnt get to the festival, they chuckle in understanding and say they will be back in 30 minutes and i wont be there when they get back, right? yes. so i pack up and go to subway for a sandwich, some iced tea, and a major poo. then i head over to the festival. i get to the festival ground, meet marina (?) in the bandit office, get my passes, get my camping pass and shit, find a nice spot near the bbq pits and set up shop. niiiiice, i am here. walking around with my bottle of maker's mark in hand it is not that hard to meet people, after then getting over the obstacle of i dont speak your language, i get to know three quite attractive boys from denmark and a girl from stravanger. we hang out for awhile drinking and bullshiting,...i walk around the site to get my bearings, check out the main stage where i see they have a wire camera, which i had previously only seen used at sporting events, bla bla bla...then the arcade fire and the killers, we so lived in the moment, met pierre who is an assistant to toffen whoi is really funny and nice. and it becomes a night of booze and beer and then a spliff...then we have yesterday...i am not in the mood to go into all this right now. but i got sick along the way. im sure sleeping in that damn parking garage and being wet and cold didnt help at all, but i am getting better each day and by the time i get back and go to roskilde i will be feeling like a million bucks again and there is an unbelievable line up there and i will be with jason and i cant fucking wait it will be a blast. i am currently still uploading those videos to youtube for jason from glastonbury so i can put them up on panjea...oh, so an online magazine called Henne (www.henne.no) took pictures of me and asked me questions they said i would be up on their site for festival style, after having thought about it i would have answered their questions differently (namely, do you have any style icons? i would have now said jim morrison, pete doherty, and carlos d (from interpol))

okok, i have to go to the beach with the boys, more later, having a blast.....

Day 2 of Hove Festival

Well, it is my second day here at the Hove Festival. In much different spirits than I was during my last post. I have found myself a good group of people with whom I have spent the last day and night with (a group of 3 Danish boys and one Norweigean girl). What music have I seen here thus far:
X-Queen of the Astronauts
Arcade Fire
The Killers
Tokyo Police Club
Oh No Ono
Interpol

Musically, it has not been the most eventful of festivals.

This is a festival where the line-up is not unbelievable. As a festival, it is its first year and with it, they are certainly learning a lot. Toffen brought his crew over from Quart and it is a great site here and there is a lot of potential. I missed the first day which happened to have a lot of the music that I really wanted to see (Incubus, Queens of the Stone Age, Amy Winehouse, The Klaxons, The Twang, Kaiser Chiefs). Of those bands, really I am nnoyed most that I didn't get to see Incubus: a. because I have never had the privilege of seeing them live and b. because it would have been nice to hang out with Seth here and probably hang out with the band. Furthermore, it would have been good to have seen the Clipse.

I guess I haven't posted very much over the last few days here so maybe a re-cap is appropriate...

Well, here we go...

Monday morning was the end of my glastonbury experience, it started bright and early at 5am as I packed up in the rain. ...this is gonna have to wait...press tent is closing

Stuck in Norway

Well, its about midnight and i do not have a hotel room in Arendal and it is raining outside. It has been a fucking day and I am sick and it is raining again. Apparently, I did not leave it back in the UK.

Heading to Oslo

Just about to baord. Almost done loading the pics and vids. Oslo, here I come!

BA770 LHR to OSL

Post-Glastonbury

1:37PM 25/6/07 Starbucks (Chelsea) at Broomhouse Rd. ad New Kings Rd.

Well, Glastonbury is now behind me. The battery for my camera is dead and the adapter for the charger won't fit into the outlet here so I will have to wait until I am at Heathrow or in Oslo to upload all my content.

The drizzle has followed me. Hopefully, it won't continue to follow me into Oslo and beyond.

What a festival! Where to begin, dear, where to begin!?!

Massive. What a site. 177,000 people!

I'll delve into the music in due time as that was just one of the amazing aspects...

The people. I didn't see a single scuffle. Not a punch thrown. What nice people. Lots of sorry's and excuse's me and more than enough cheers mate's!

The mud. Sticky. Worse than quick sand along many pedestrian pathes. Crowded is an understantment. But, well maintained. And, as much as could have been done as far as crowd control was done.

A complaint would be that during certain performances (namely, Iggy and the Stooges on the Other Stage). The pit area was watched over with a cautious eye by those staffed there. They were more concerned with people coming over the gate and getting onto the stage (even though Iggy invited us up there) and it should be noted that his words were "don't allow them to let you up, just get the f*ck up here, it's the world famous Glastobury dancers." What a show, what a party. He is a creature! But, the staff were not looking over the people as muc as they, by my view, should have. Everyone in there was so courteous though in the way of helping people up and making sure smaller people and girls were out of harm's way.

The size. WOW! The "republic of Glastonbury" spanned for miles and miles in any directions.

My campsite...overloking the Pramid Stage. After having wandered about for nearly an hour in search of "the perfect spot," I settled back on where I was initially and where my ideal vision looked like before having left the States. Top of the hill. The pyramid Stage in glorious view from the front of my tent. And, right next to the Pyramid Property Lock-Up so I could drop off my camera charger off each day to refill with energy as I found out that the battery I have doesn't last very long (note to self: buy a new camera battery because: a. I think th one I have now which is the only one i have had for that nearly five-year-old camera has to be running low and b. so that I can just pop in a new, completely charged battery in the future and not have to fuss with charging one.

So....the music....for now, I will mention the names of the bands whose performances stand out in my head at the moment and then go into detail later when I have my program in front of me nd can really remember more of the details of my experience:
-on the Other Stage:
Babyshambles
Bjork
The View
The Long Blondes
Editors
Iggy and the Stooges
The Rakes
-on the John Peel Stage:
Patrick Wolf
The Gossip
Tokyo Police Club
Rumple Strips
-on the Pyramid Stage:
Arctic Monkeys
Dirty Pretty Things
Lily Allen
The View
Seasick Steve (lol)
Bloc Party
The Marley Brothers
Kasabian (in between naps)
Gogol Bordello (where I lost my grenade :( )

Because of the weather, it made it possible for so many performances to be elevated with sunshine and to make it seem as though the clouds indeed were opening up just for that performer (see: Lily Allen, Marly Brothers, etc.) And then there were those performances that elicited the performer to thank the crowd "for dancing around in the f*ckin mud and rain for us" (see: Gogol Bordello, Dirty Pretty Things, etc.)

All of my stress about not being able to get in were lessened initially by my brother and Janet (Primary) and Annaya(main production office) and once I got that ticket (WOW), cracked open that fucking bottle of Maker's Mark and meet some new folks: Louie, Lidia, and Patrick. They had a bottle of Jack and we exchanged gulps as a circle.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The chaos of the pit for Iggy. The saturday I got to spend with the aussie, Marius, after having courted him at The Long Blondes. The muddy debauchery of the final night's performance by the View with Ky and his forklift-driving mate (fair play, fair play). The raw, embraceful emotion and energy and power of the Editors' lead man. Patrick Wolf's set that was cut short but filled with so much dance dance dance energy energy energy. Bjork's DJ playing with some interesting technology that I am curious to see more up close and at Hove (or Roskilde?). Getting right up in front for the Gossip and experiencing her and that guitarist's power. Getting that rock of hash for 10 quid (which Marius paid for) during Lily Allen from that hip hop cat. Speaking with ? (Golden State Warriors' Chris Mullin jersey) about the state of hip hop and States/Euro cdifferences/similarities. Having successfully packed up my tent. Spliff after successful spliff rolled by yours truly. Not having taken out my Blackberry from the tent until the last night. Having realized that being an America is novel at Glastonbury and that I can draw people to me simply by opening up a line of communication, i.e. opening my mouth. The location of my tent and that it was what I envisioned and then some. Climbing on top of the Pyramid Property lock-up to watch Kaiser Chiefs. Finding that cooler on the gorund during the Babyshambles and stepping on top it for the majority of their performance, thus giving me the best view possible (!). Still having my Mac in working order after the festival (!).

LOWLIGHTS:
Packing up my tent at 5:30AM this morning in the rain. Getting stuck in the mud on multiple occassions. Having had many muddy wellie's (read: officially sanctioned Glastonbury rain boots) slide across my face as people crowd-surfed their way onto stage for Iggy and the Stooges. The fact that no one was ever satisfied at the end of a set (always screaming for more and never just accepting that what they just saw was a satiating set). Letting Marius leave without pursuing him more aggressively (read: being more of a leader and guide as he was clearly a "follower" type who was genuinely interested in "new" experiences). The pins and needles feeling throughout my whole body after having walked miles and miles with my pack on. Taking a cump (and there was only one that was taken) in a port-a-loo on Saturday morning. Having taken a "shower" by way of Dove face wipes on a towel like a baby in my tent. Realizing that what I thought was blow was kettamine (and then blowing it out of my nose best I could when he told me what it was, but it should be noted that I did enjoy the maybe 15-minute body high I got from the bit that I had injested). Not having put the rain cover on my tent the first night and waking up rather soaked. Almost having had my camera die and going thru all my mental anguish (highlight: it coming back to life after nearly drowning). Dropping my pillow and blanket in a big puddle just before I load my pack onto the coach. Not taking Maius' phone number when he offered it to me. Thinking that looking good would draw people to me (and thus losing my grenade (!) in the mud of Goggol Bordello's performance). Taking a nap while Arcade Fire was performing. Not making it up on to stage with others while Iggy and the Stooges performed. Realizing that there is no program on my MacBook that allows me to record video (i.e. Photobooth only captures still images)(there should be a program called Confessional Booth or something that allows you to record yourself with the built-in video recorder)(you can use YouTube to make your own videos of yourself and post them but if you don't have an internet connection as I didn't, that isn't possible.

Wow...I've got to stop here. 29 minutes of battery left and I need to book my hostel room for tonight in Oslo and maybe IM some friends on AIM...

...more to come later....

cheers,

London for the day

Well, I am going to go back over to the Earl's Court bus depot before 4pm and take the bus to Pilton. I checked train fares. It would be 50 pounds to get up there and it just does not seem worth it to me. I understand that the only way I am going to be able to sort out my ticket situation is simply to be up there and to speak with them.

I'm currently with a cup of espresso at a cafe on the corner of William IV Street (WC2) and St. Martin's Lane (WC2). After having had an English breakfast of ham, sausage, eggs, beans, bread, and coffee, I checked out of the hotel and left my bag there. Walked around a bit and then took the tube to Leicester Square. I recall Patrick Wolf speaking of ths area. I would quite like to buy some hash before heading up to Glasto. I'd like to go to Hyde Park and sit for a bit or head to East london and walk around a bit. I am scared to use my Google Maps on my BB because i think: a. it doesn't cover the world and b. my bill would get quite ridiculous with all that data transfer. I also need to buy a converter so I can charge up all my technology here and there. Oh, and I just paid 6 pounds for this internet access so I hope I look back on this entry with some kind of fond memory. Toodles...

Here I am

In London...at 12:51 am...in the lobby of Hotel Lily

I am just blocks away from where the bus depot is.

I had to pay 40 pounds for tis room, which I am annoyed about. I went over to the bus depot and considered jumping over the fence with my stuff and sleeping on the concrete in the carpark. But, I opted to come to a hotel and have one shower and night of sleep (well, nap) before embarking on my Glastonbury journey. I will be camping on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, I will come back to London on Monday and then fly to Oslo that night.

Let's just focus on this first festival and not get ahead of ourselves (well, myself because we are really just talking about me)...which I will know begin a rant about after this cigarette.

I do these things alone. Last summer, I did this for two months. This summer, I do it for 3 weeks. This is what I do.

In asking myself, why I love this stuff so much and having had other people (namely, my brother and my dad too), there is some confusion.

WHY is it that i love this shit?

Music has been my escape and my obsession for so long. Regardless of all that is happening in my life, music is my constant. When I was in Boulder, I could always go to the Fox. I went to shows solo all the time. It made no difference to me. I always was up on some new bands. To me, I am lonely and have been for awhile. Whether it was in high school, when I had a ton of friends (read: acquaintances) but no one who I was very close with. I lacked that close circle, that srong bond, of close friends. That followed me to college where I knew many people but was close with few. Then, I took a job working for Sasha after college for University Denim where I was on the road 3 weeks out of every month for 10 months. It was and is hard to be close with people. And, now I am back living in LA, and while I know a lot of people, I am close with few (to none). So, music is there for me. Watching my videos on Panjea and blasting the music in my car or stereo. It is always there. That consistency.

Tonight, I was really going to hop that fence and sleep on the ground in that bus depot but I, and this randomly popped into my head at the time, what my dad said when he gave me 300 USD: sleep in a hotel and have nice bed and shower a few times please. HAHA. Well, dad, I am heeding your advice. And, while I think that that 40 quid could have been better spent on a pair of wellies or a bag of blow, here I am.

[this pack of hispanic tourists talking about how they went thru this ghetto and black guys all over]...funny people

In any event, another sip of whiskey...1:20am...a cigarette and some shut eye...hopefully, not alone, a prospect has sat nearby...go for it....

One continuous delay

My 8:30am flight has now been delayed to 9am...keep the energy positive, david...

Currency Exchange is a bitch...

To get 170 GBP, I had to give 385.58 USD. Wow.

I figured I would budget myself 50 GBP a day at the festival x 4 days which would give me a budget of 200 GBP.

I need to buy wellies (wellington boots) as well as probably some big waterproof jacket (similar to what I got last year at T in the Park) because this festival is going to be a wet one.

I did get a nice bottle of Maker's Mark and a carton of Marlbro Mediums. The whiskey will be gone by the end of Glastonbury, but the cigarettes should not be. Go DUTY FREE!

It is 6:42 AM and my flight is supposed to depart at 8:30 AM.

So, as far as getting into Glastonbury, I just need to get up to the site. I have all the contact info I need (that which will be of most help will probably be the main production office who was very nice to Jason when he had called earlier). As soon as I get into London, after going thru customs, I need to buy a converter and then get my tookis over to where the coaches are departing from. Still unsure if it was a good decision, I used my Sharpie to change the time on my coach ticket from 3pm to 9pm. It looks ok, but I think if someone sees it and they will obviously notice because my festival ticket won't be on that bus, it will look like I am some shady person. But, anywho, I will get to Glastonbury.

I am the assistant to the manager and U.S. agent that represents a number of acts that work with Primary, but they are not on this festival.
I came all the way from Los Angeles to come to this festival with all the money I had.

I will be fine.

"Who can turn a frown upside down?" - an understatement

Jason...Primary...Please

I'm sure Primary has some artist(s) on the bill at Glastonbury.

I'm sure Jason has a good relationship with someone(s) at Primary.

It's all out of my hands.

Well, there is nothing I can do. It is 5:20 am in New York and I am sitting at a table at a Dunkin Donuts booth at JFK.
I am wishing on the stars with all my positive energy that it falls into place.
I totally understand that logistically, it would be extremely difficult to coordinate some other form of ticket pick-up especially considering that the way in which Eavis was allowed to add the extra numbers to attendance for this year (which, by the way, if he hadn't, I probably would not have been able to get a ticket) by making it such that the additional people attending would not be taking private transportation. However, I don't apprecaite theway in which the woman from See Tickets informed me of such news.

[on phone with Jason]

Lou Fitzgerald (assistant to Malcolm Haines)

Primary (Janet)

K'Naan

Damian Marley

This is real!

Anger, Frustration, Emotion.

This is real.

If I am not on that coach at 3pm, I cannot go to Glastonbury.

No way, no how. Logisitcally, it would be impossible.

This is not fucking happening.

There is no way in hell I am going to be in London for x number of days while Glastonbury is going on and not fucking be there.

Fucking American Airlines.
Fucking weather around NY.
Fucking pilot who bitched out and went to Norfolk, VA to re-fuel instead of fucking going into JFK.

Who else can I blame? And is it fucking relevant or productive anyway?!?

I AM GOING.
I will take the first coach I see when I am there and I will get there. I will go into the office and they will pull up my reference number. This cannot happen. I cannot not go to Glastonbury!

"Alright, Thanks, Bye"

No ticket for you, David. You miss your coach, you miss your ticket. No Glastonbury for you.

15 Hours Later, I'm in NY

2 planes and delays, delays, delays.

Do you really care to hear about all that it has taken for me to get halfway to my destination?

Well, this is going to be short and over soon.

1. I get on my original light from LAX to JFK. There is a problem with the pressurizing mechanism of one side of the plane so after waiting on the plane for about 2 hours, they take us back to the gate.

2. I get on the next flight to JFK which is scheduled to depart at 1:15 pm, which is also delayed because of an excessive need of wheelchairs. We get off the ground en route to JFK only to find that there is crap weather in NY which is slowing down flights going in and out of there. We have to divert to Norfolk, VA to re-fuel. We stay on the ground there for about 2 hours.

about 2am, we touch down at JFK.

It is currently 4:18am and my flight to London departs at 8:30am. I am set to arrive at 8:30pm. The coach I was supposed to take up to Glastonbruy leaves at 3pm.

[i am on the phone right now with a guy from See Tickets to see what I can do] [he put me on hold to talk to his supervisor]

3 Weeks, 3 Countries, 3 Festivals...

10:02 AM : LAX : American Airlines terminal: awaiting flight to JFK: en route to London.

The journey begins. The backpack has been packed. It's all in there and if it ain't, I'll get it when I need it.

I have been looking forward to this in an immediate sense for the last few weeks; and, in a distant sense since April when I finally got my ticket to Glastonbury after the arduous process of registration, then trying and trying again thru 3 ticket sales opportunities. Finally, at about 3am in Boulder, Colorado with Dylon, armed with two MacBooks, "You request is being processed." Wow!

Well, it is supposed to rain rain rain at Glasto. Hopefully, the new tent I got will withstand the weather. It should. I got a Laker flag to put on my tent. It's one of those flags that people would put on their car. I was very pleased with the purchase. Pictures to follow. It will defintely help me distinguish my tent from the rest. I remember last summer at T in the Park...haha...wow....these drunk boys and their "I think we had a blue tent, mate" as they stumbled amidst the literally thousands of blue tents at the campsite. They chose to sit down, dodge a bit of the rain under a tree, and sniff poppers to numb the frustration with giggles.

I'm quite excited to be back in some of the places I was one year ago and these NEW festivals. A year older, one more year of maturity, bla. It's been an interesting ride. I'm loving the memories that are creeping back into my mind.
+ Pukkelpop with Sarah and Waldo and Jes!
+ Sneking into Rock en Siene in Paris when I had no money left and climbing up the tower of the soundbooth with those girls from southern France and watching that sea of energy moving in unison to the music of Thom and Radiohead (similar in experience to seeing Masive Attack on the main stage at Coachella 2006 and standing up on the barricade stage-right and watching that pile of energy).
+ at T in the Park, in that tent with Jema and those guys, rainging so hard, just swallowed some pills, passing around spliffs and poppers in a liter bottle...with 7 in a tent that was maybe built for two. Jema couldn't stop talking about the duck feather duveys that she missed oh so much that were back in her flat in London.
+ at Quart festival, walking around with those 2 boys, losing my D & G glasses, drinking Jager in that mini bunk-bed room at Centrum Motel. Apeshit, Mooseshit,...funny kids. Kanye and Tool playing on the same stage to tens of thousands of Nordic white blonde-haired, blue-eyed boys.

It really does go on and on. This will be another adventure.

10:27 AM and I gotta board the flight.

Fire Corner

Up in fire corner, in the north east corner of Glebeland Theatre Field, there will be a great fire show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from Solar, Elemental and the Festival Fire Swingers. And, on Thursday once it is dark, and on Friday and Saturday, once the Saddlespan Dance Stage has closed, come and watch the amazing Eddie Egal and Arson Art present their stunning flame show “Pyronautic”. 60 foot flames, sexy actors and some truly dangerous and ravishing effects – not to be missed.
